While we were in Hawaii, some of us took a short hike up to the Kaiwa Ridge where some World War II pillboxes, or bunkers, are located. These bunkers were built in 1942 and used as observation posts and a fire control station for gun batteries located at Bellows Air Force station. Men were stationed in these pillboxes and instructed the gunners located in Bellows over radio the placement of their shots (right, left, over, short, etc.). The pillboxes were built following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 to help repel any more Japanese attacks, but none came.
